Apocalyptica is a Finnish symphonic metal band renowned for their unique fusion of classical music and heavy metal. Formed in 1993 in Helsinki, the group initially gained fame as a cello-driven act performing instrumental covers of Metallica songs. Their innovative approach—combining the powerful, resonant tones of classical string instruments with the intensity and aggression of metal—quickly set them apart in the music scene.

The core of Apocalyptica's sound revolves around cellists Eicca ToppinenPerttu Kivilaakso and Paavo Lötjönen, alongside drummer Mikko Kaakkuriniemi. Over the years, their style has evolved to include original compositions and collaborations with prominent vocalists and musicians across genres like Till Lindemann (Rammstein), James Hetfield (Metallica), Corey Taylor (Stone Sour / Slipknot), Dave Lombardo (Slayer), Max Cavalera (Soulfly / Cavalera Conspiracy), Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil), Ville Valo (HIM), Joe Duplantier (Gojira), Nina Hagen and a long etc.. This versatility has allowed them to transcend traditional musical boundaries, appealing to fans of both classical and modern music.

LIVE REVIEW: Apocalyptica Shines in Madrid with "Plays Metallica Vol. 2"

On November 18, La Riviera in Madrid transformed into a sonic cathedral as Finnish cello metal pioneers Apocalyptica delivered a performance that was as hauntingly beautiful as it was electrifying. Despite their recent visit to Madrid in February 2023 alongside Epica, Apocalyptica returned captivating fans with their latest album, "Plays Metallica Vol. 2". Unlike their previous show, this time there were no guest vocalists; instead, the cellists let their instruments and the audience's voices take center stage.

The concert opened with “Ride the Lightning”, following a suspenseful intro that had fans on edge. From the start, Eicca Toppinen, Perttu Kivilaakso and Paavo Lötjönen connected with the crowd, with Eicca charmingly speaking in Spanish and Perttu energetically moving around the stage, even stepping down to interact with fans near the photo pit. Mikko Kaakkuriniemi's drumming was the backbone of the performance, providing a relentless pulse that tied the orchestral elements together seamlessly. Throughout the night, the chemistry between the band members was evident.

Blending tracks from the new album with Metallica classics, the band paid tribute to their inspirations, reminiscing about their beginnings 28 years ago. Songs like “Creeping Death”, “For Whom the Bell Tolls”, and “Battery” proved timeless, as the audience sang along passionately to every word. The haunting instrumental “The Call of Ktulu”, dedicated to the late Cliff Burton, added a powerful emotional touch to the setlist. The visual effects were as striking as the music, particularly during “St. Anger”, where green lights enveloped the stage, enhancing the intensity of the performance.

The evening reached its peak with an emotionally charged rendition of “Nothing Else Matters”, as the venue lit up with a sea of phone lights, and an electrifying performance of “Master of Puppets” left the audience in awe. The night ended with “One”, featuring a reimagined arrangement and a recorded narration by Metallica’s James Hetfield, a fitting tribute to their musical roots.

Apocalyptica’s performance at La Riviera was more than just a concert; it was an experience. They blurred the lines between genres, proving once again that their artistry defies categorization. For those in attendance, the night was a reminder of the power of music to transcend boundaries and create something truly unforgettable.
